Consent education advocate Chanel Contos has accused social media companies of feeding misogynistic content to young men online. During her National Press Club appearance, Contos spoke about the impact of the manosphere on Gen Z, currently 14 to 29-year-olds, in Australia.
Contos said content is promoted because social media companies and users have identified a huge market for highly emotive content that supports male-supremacist ideologies.
She’s urging the government to compel social media companies to change algorithmic feeds, so that users only see content from the accounts they choose to follow in order to stop the promotion and slow the circulation of extreme and harmful content. Such a move would revert social media algorithms to how they were a decade ago.
