China’s economy got off to a sluggish start in the second half, reviving pressure on policymakers to support growth as industrial output, consumption and investment all fared worse than forecast.
Fresh fighting in Lebanon and attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz are clouding the outlook for a deal to end the war in Iran. Negotiations between the US and Iran appear to be at a standstill, and the US has said it will announce unprecedented economic measures against Tehran.
The dollar has dipped and US Treasuries gained after weak US economic data reduced bets on a rate hike by the Federal Reserve next month.
