Colombian right-wing millionaire wins presidential election, initial count shows

Right-wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella appears to have narrowly won Colombia’s presidential run-off, taking close to 50 per cent of the initial vote count.

The country is currently dealing with a brutal internal conflict between armed groups, the state and cartels, as well high public debt and a divided congress.

De la Espriella’s opponent, left-wing candidate Ivan Cepeda, promised to continue the policies of outgoing president Gustavo Petro.

The result furthers a shift toward the right for countries across Latin America, in a reversal of the region’s so-called pink tide which saw several left-wing governments brought to power in the early 2020s.
