Australian comedian Peter Helliar has called out the behaviour of fellow male comedians in a video posted on social media.
He refers to a now-delete video with four male comedians in Melbourne who make a “horrific joke about the murdered American hiker Gabby Petito, who was murdered by her boyfriend” in a podcast.
He also says “we lost one of our own”, acknowledging the murder and rape of Australian comedian Eurydice Dixon while walking home from a gig in 2018.
He asked male comedians to consider how fellow female comedians may navigate the comedy space as a performer.
“Are they thinking more about the backstage space than they are the space on stage?” Helliar says.
“Comedy should be the most fun thing to do in the world, it should also be safe.
“So f*** anyone who robs a female comedian or members of the LGBTQIA community of that thrill.”
