In the hours before the 30th United Nations climate change conference opened in Brazil, the nation’s president issued a plea to world leaders gathered in the Amazon.
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva says the “era of fine speeches and good intentions is over”.
Among those in attendance are the EU, whose climate ministers agreed to a weakened climate target in last-minute negotiations as they raced to clinch the deal before the summit.
But doubts are being raised about whether enough can be achieved without one of the world’s biggest carbon emitters.
