The NSW seat of Farrer was recently vacated by former opposition leader Sussan Ley, and now there’s a four-horse race across this sprawling electorate — the second largest in NSW.
The by-election offers voters a chance to shake up traditional political power in the regions of Australia.
Simon Welsh, director of political consultancy firm Redbridge, said “One Nation has become this very viable, credible alternative” for some voters.
He said the main contest was likely to be between independent candidate, Michelle Milthorpe — who reduced the margin against Sussan Ley at last year’s federal election — and One Nation’s David Farley.
Welsh said Milthorpe likely benefited from an “anti-establishment” vote at the last election.
“She’s now having to share some of that with One Nation,” he said.
