ICYMI: Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said Cuba has “unleashed a preparation plan” for possible US aggression against the island nation.
Speaking to activists at a solidarity event in Havana on 20 March, Diaz-Canal said United States President Donald Trump had stated “all possible pressure had been applied on Cuba” and that the only option left for the US was “take the place and destroy everything”.
Trump has made several statements about a possible US takeover of Cuba.
On 9 March, he told reporters that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been “dealing” with Cuba and that it may or may not be “a friendly takeover”.
He added that the country was “running on fumes” and that Venezuela was sending them “no energy, no fuel, no oil, no money, no nothing” and that the US had “cut them off from everything else”.
More recently, Trump said he believed he would have the “honour of taking Cuba”.
“Taking Cuba in some form … I mean, whether I free it, take it. I think I can do anything I want with it, you want to know the truth. They’re a very weakened nation,” he said.
Yesterday, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said Cuba would “be willing to engage in a serious and responsible dialogue” with the US, stressing that it would be without “interference in internal affairs”.
