The Swiss singer Nemo was last year’s Eurovision winner. This year they are returning the trophy.
They said there was “a clear conflict” between the song contest’s ideals of “unity, inclusion and dignity for all” and the decision to allow Israel to compete.
And five European broadcasters have boycotted next year’s competition over Israel’s inclusion.
“Undoubtedly a watershed moment in the 70-year history of the song contest,” as put by the Guardian’s European culture editor, Philip Oltermann.
The Israeli broadcaster Kan has welcomed the decision to keep Israel in the contest, rejecting allegations of political interference.
