Famine in Gaza ’caused by cruelty and justified by revenge,’ UN aid chief says

“A famine caused by cruelty”: A UN-backed famine review committee has found more than half a million people in Gaza City and surrounding areas are officially experiencing famine, with the number predicted to rise to 641,000 by the end of September.

Responding to the report, UN aid chief Tom Fletcher said the famine has been “caused by cruelty, justified by revenge, enabled by indifference, and sustained by complicity” and demanded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “open the crossings” and let supplies in on a massive scale “for humanity’s sake”.

It is the first time the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has recorded famine outside of Africa.

Israel dismissed the findings as false and biased, saying the IPC had based its survey on partial data largely provided by Hamas, which did not take into account a recent influx of food.
