Federal politics shaken by One Nation’s performance in South Australian elections

A resurgent Labor government and a fractured conservative vote have emerged as the key takeaways of the South Australian election, with Premier Peter Malinauskas securing a decisive return to office and One Nation surging to historic levels of support.

The state elections were a nightmare for the Liberal Party as voters flocked to One Nation, making Pauline Hanson’s party a significant force in South Australian politics.

One Nation won 22 per cent of the first preference vote in the House of Assembly, compared to the Liberal Party’s 19 per cent. One Nation also performed better in the Legislative Council, and received a higher quota than the Liberals.

Federal Liberal senator Anne Ruston said it was concerning to see the deterioration in her party’s state vote.
“The people have spoken and there’s been quite a large message sent,” Ruston told ABC TV.
