IPA Deputy Executive Director Daniel Wild claims Australia’s tobacco black market is thriving while governments continue to raise excise.
“It’s far more common to buy something on the black market than on the legal market at the moment when it comes to tobacco, and you’ve pointed out the crime and the firebombings and everything that goes with it,” Mr Wild told Sky News host Rita Panahi.
“If the excise were to be cut, you would actually get more revenue because people would go back to the legal market.
“I think it’s really quite extraordinary though, that we’re in this situation where it’s just so obvious.”
