A brutal attack on a Hindu businessman in Bangladesh on December 31 reignited concerns over minority safety just weeks before national elections. Fifty-year-old Khokon Chandra Das was stabbed, hacked and set on fire by attackers while returning home after closing his medicine shop south of Dhaka. He remains critical in a Dhaka hospital. This is the fourth reported attack on Hindus in two weeks. India has condemned the violence and urged Bangladeshi authorities to ensure minority protection. The incident comes as Bangladesh prepares for its first election since Sheikh Hasina’s ouster, with the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami expected to play a key political role, raising fears that communal tensions could worsen in the volatile pre-poll period.
