Four Dead As Wildfires Ravage Europe, Devastating Spain And Portugal | 10 News

Wildfires tearing through Spain and Portugal have claimed four lives, with searing heat and fierce winds fanning some of the worst blazes in decades.

Two volunteer firefighters in Spain’s Castile and León were trapped by rapidly spreading flames while cutting back vegetation, one dying within hours and the other after suffering burns to 85% of his body.

Earlier in the week, a man near Madrid was killed trying to rescue horses from a burning stable.

A man has also died in a fire in Albania.

The EU has sent water-bombing planes to assist both countries, with more than 500,000 hectares already scorched across Europe this year 134 per cent above the 20-year average.

Experts warn climate change has already doubled southern Europe’s wildfire risk since 1990, and it’s set to get worse.
