France has erupted in a major nationwide showdown. Thousands of students, teachers and parents took to the streets across the country in the biggest day of demonstrations yet. As anger mounted, fires were set, projectiles were thrown and police fired tear gas in several cities.
From Strasbourg and Lyon to Rennes, clashes broke out as police moved against demonstrators. In Marseille and Nantes, protesters carried a stark message: “The state has killed national education.” In Toulouse, parents stood arm-in-arm at the front of the protest as thousands marched through the city.
The nationwide action marks the biggest day of demonstrations since the protests began in September, with unrest spreading across major cities and tensions continuing to escalate.
