Former Australian of the Year Grace Tame has reacted to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s apology after calling her “difficult”, saying “spare me the condescension, old man”.
Albanese has faced criticism after he labelled Tame “difficult” during a rapid-fire game at a conference earlier this week, where he was asked to give one-word responses to a list of well-known figures.
During the exchange, he also called One Nation leader Pauline Hanson “divisive”, Donald Trump “president”, and former prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor a “grub”.
Defending his comment about Tame, a child sexual abuse survivor and vocal advocate, he said the meaning of his response was misinterpreted.
“She has had a difficult life, and that was what I was referring to,” he told reporters.
“If there was any misinterpretation, then I certainly apologise.”
Shortly after, Tame reacted to the apology through a social media comment, saying “We all know what you meant … a badge of honour anyway”.
