Hong Kong pro-democracy media tycoon sentenced to 20yrs prison | Japan’s ‘Iron Lady’ to remain as PM

Hong Kong’s former media mogul, 78-year-old Jimmy Lai, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for national security offences. The landmark ruling completes a long effort by Beijing to dismantle the influence of a man it blamed as a “mastermind” for Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement.

In a historic sweep following a snap election, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s governing coalition has secured what’s being called a ‘super-majority’ in Japan’s lower house of parliament – according to exit polls. The record result paves the way for Japan’s first female leader to pursue a more hardline agenda on immigration and China, while pushing for greater defence spending and tax relief.
