Slugs are notorious for causing significant damage to crops. At New Scientist Live this year, researchers from Harper Adams University explain how they are trying to tackle this issue.
By microchipping slugs to track their movements, they’ve discovered that slugs cluster in small, concentrated areas instead of spreading across whole fields. This data enables farmers to focus their pest control efforts on these specific hotspots, allowing them to use fewer pesticides.
The result? A smarter, more sustainable way to protect crops, saving farmers time, money and reducing chemical usage.
