Mining may dominate conversations about Bougainville’s economy, but it’s not the whole story. So we push on, across rivers and through dense rainforest towards Buin, the southern district’s capital. Outside major centres, areas like Buin have had even less access to public services.
Recently though, Southern Bougainville has seen a surge in economic activity, a spike in global cocoa prices drives cash into the south. As Bougainville prepares for independence, cocoa farmers feel cash crops can be better leveraged to fund the new nation.
