King Charles I was taken prisoner and put under house arrest in 1646 after his forces lost the English Civil War to the Parliamentarians, who opposed the King’s tyrannical belief in the divine right of kings.
Charles I was ultimately tried and convicted of treason, and in January 1649, the ex king became the only British monarch to be formally executed by the state.Â
While there have been no other instances of members of the royal family actually being arrested in modern history, Princess Anne was fined £500 for breaching the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act when her dog bit two children, and Anne, Prince Philip and Zara Tindall have all received traffic fines.
