Author Simon Vigar told PEOPLE that both Prince William and Prince Harry “were in love in a way that Charles and Diana were not.”
“When Meghan married Harry in 2018, she was older than Diana was when she died. There were different expectations.”
As for the Prince and Princess of Wales, Vigar said that they have a “totally different” vision for the future of the monarchy, and that importantly they are trying to give their children a life that’s as private as possible.
George, Charlotte and Louis’ childhood “is mostly private apart from moments like appearances at Trooping the Colour and the annual carol service.”
“What they have tried to do is get their family home life right and then work on the public profile, and that’s very, very different to how the [monarchy] has been structured in generations beforehand.”
Vigar added that he feels like Diana was the “change maker” who made it possible.
