US congresswoman Ilhan Omar has said “fear and intimidation” won’t work on her after a man sprayed her with a syringe of apple cider vinegar at a town hall meeting where she was criticising the Trump administration’s anti-immigration crackdown.
“The president’s rhetoric, the attacks from him since I’ve gotten into public office, from the right wing, has always been really to stop me from being in public service, to intimidate me, to make me want to quit,” she said.
Omar, who has been a vocal advocate for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), said the attacker “was specifically upset that Trump’s order to deport Somalis was not yielding enough deportations of Somalis”.
“He wanted to come get the person he thought was protecting the Somalis … well, we are protected by the constitution,” she added.
