In Cyprus, one million cats roam the streets | ABC NEWS

In the small island nation of Cyprus in the Mediterranean, there’s approximately one cat for every human, but activists say that the real number is higher and the problem is getting out of hand. Despite an ongoing sterilisation program, the number of feral cats continues to climb.

Cyprus’s Environment Minister has moved to triple the programme funding, but the island’s parliamentary committee isn’t convinced that simply increasing funding won’t be enough, and that a better plan is needed.

The current program relies on volunteers from animal conservation groups to bring feral cats to private veterinarian clinics for sterilisation.
