The new BJP government in West Bengal has moved quickly to begin fencing the India-Bangladesh border. In its first Cabinet meeting after a landslide election victory, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that land required for border fencing would be handed over to the BSF within 45 days. The BJP says the move is aimed at tackling illegal infiltration and strengthening national security. Bangladesh, however, responded cautiously, saying it is ‘not afraid of barbed wire’ and hopes border issues are handled through dialogue. The India-Bangladesh border remains one of India’s busiest and most sensitive frontiers, with over 1,100 infiltration attempts and more than 2,500 arrests recorded between January and November 2025 alone.
