Inside an “extremely complex and dangerous” rescue in Venezuela

After spending more than a week trapped in the rubble of a collapsed shopping centre, Hernán Alberto Gil Flores has been rescued alive.

The 43-year-old was working from a small cabin in the basement when the twin earthquakes hit. As the building collapsed, his security cabin offered some protection and a small but vital pocket of air.

Five days later, the Costa Rican Red Cross discovered Flores was still alive. The next day, formal rescue efforts started.
