A team of researchers from Foresty England has translocated six wood ant nests from cropland forest in Yorkshire, UK, to Ennerdale in Cumbria, UK. The project is part of an effort to help the ants, known to promote woodland biodiversity and health, spread to more locations, especially where they struggle to disperse in areas where there are gaps in forest cover. It’s thought the ants are constrained to just 14 per cent of UK woodland, and that the learnings here could be applied more widely in the future.
