Israel moves to control the south of Lebanon | Moscow launches one of its biggest daytime assaults

Israel’s defence minister says his country intends to occupy a large part of southern Lebanon to create what he calls a ‘defensive buffer’ against Hezbollah. That would include the entire area up to the Litani River which amounts to nearly a tenth of the country. Hezbollah has declared it will fight advancing Israeli forces, calling the move an ‘existential threat’ to the Lebanese state
