Japan Heads For Mars’ Largest Moon: Can A Microwave-Sized Rover Bring Phobos Samples Back To Earth?

Japan’s Martian Moons eXploration mission has begun its journey to Phobos, aiming to return samples from Mars’ largest moon. Launched aboard an H3 rocket, the uncrewed spacecraft will deploy IDEFIX, a German-French rover designed to explore the surface and support landing preparations. MMX aims to collect at least 10 grams of material and study Mars’ smaller moon, Deimos, through flybys. Scientists hope the samples will help reveal whether the moons formed after a giant impact or were captured asteroids. The mission could also advance understanding of planetary formation and support preparations for future human exploration of the wider Martian system.
