Hardline conservative Sanae Takaichi pledged to build a “strong Japan” after being elected in parliamentary votes to become the country’s first female prime minister on Tuesday.
In her first press conference, Takaichi promised to work tirelessly to restore Japan’s economic might.
The new Japanese leader also said she would deepen the country’s relationship with the United States under President Donald Trump.
Takaichi has said defence and national security would be core pillars of any administration she led.
