Large explosions lit up Gaza’s skyline Saturday night as Israel announced an expansion of its military operations.
On Friday, Israel declared plans to fully take over Gaza City, a move rejected by Palestinians and condemned internationally. The decision, approved in a late-night security cabinet meeting, marks a further escalation in Israel’s 22-month war with Hamas.
Hamas issued a statement Saturday afternoon, claiming it had shown “maximum sincerity and flexibility” in past ceasefire and hostage negotiations and expressed readiness to reach an agreement to free all captives.
Hours earlier, Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office confirmed cabinet approval of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposal to eliminate Hamas, with the IDF preparing to enter Gaza City.
These developments have sparked international concern, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and several world leaders expressing alarm over rising tensions.
According to Gaza health officials, Israeli operations in the past 24 hours have killed 39 Palestinians and injured 491, including 21 killed and 341 wounded while awaiting humanitarian aid.
