Three journalists have been killed in southern Lebanon, one of who was confirmed by Israeli officials, in a targeted airstrike.
Ali Shoeib, a veteran reporter of Hezbollah-owned Al Manar TV, was killed along with reporting team Fatima Ftouni and her camera operator and brother, Mohamed, who worked for Beirut-based broadcaster Al-Mayadeen.
IDF officials accused Shoeib of being a “terrorist who operated for years under the guise of a journalist”, but have not provided evidence to support its claim that Shoeib had a military role.
The IDF did not comment on the deaths of Fatima and Mohamed Ftouni.
Lebanon’s president Joseph Aoun has condemned Israeli actions, saying, ‘Once again, the Israeli aggression is violating the most basic rules of international laws… by targeting press reporters who are ultimately civilians performing a professional duty.’
The deaths come as Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu announces a military expansion in its southern Lebanon operations, aimed to “decisively thwart the threat of invasion and to push anti-tank missile fire away” from the Israeli border.
