Liberal Senator Jonathon Duniam is allegedly set to retire at the age of 43.
Mr Duniam told Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell that the decision was made for family reasons and described it as a difficult choice.
As a senator, his retirement will not trigger a by-election, and he is expected to remain on the front bench for the time being.
