LIVE: ‘Inaccurate,’ India Rebuts Trump Aide’s ‘PM Didn’t Call Us’ Remark |Vantage with Palki Sharma

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has firmly rejected the U.S. claim that a near-finalised India–U.S. trade deal collapsed because Prime Minister Narendra Modi declined to personally speak with Donald Trump, calling it an “inaccurate characterisation” of events. The response came after U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, in a podcast said he asked PM Modi to call President Trump to close the deal. However, he said India was “uncomfortable” doing it. According to Lutnick, the U.S. had offered India tariff rates between those given to the UK and Vietnam, later withdrew the offer after signing deals with Southeast Asian nations, and refused to reopen talks when India allegedly agreed to the earlier terms. Critics argue this approach reflects an erratic, ego-driven negotiating style that prioritises speed and optics over trade realities, especially since the U.S. later offered Europe more favourable terms. With Congress now considering sweeping tariffs on countries buying Russian energy, the impasse risks escalating into a broader economic challenge for India, even as New Delhi accelerates efforts to diversify trade ties beyond the U.S. Palki Sharma tells you more.
