India is cutting the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in a big way, the biggest change to the tax system in the last eight years. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on September 3, 2025, announced major GST reforms, rationalising tax rates. Many items will now fall under the nil GST bracket, while a wide range of goods has been shifted to the 5% and 18% slabs from higher ones. The new rates kick in from 22nd September. “Summarising the reforms done in GST, it will add five gems to the Indian economy. First, the tax stream will be simpler. The quality of life of the citizens of India will increase, consumption and growth will increase, the ease of doing business will boost investment and employment, and cooperative federalism will become stronger for a developed India,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.
