Watch this video as Firstpost explains how, following Dussehra celebrations, India’s major metropolitan areas are grappling with severe air pollution as toxic smog blankets both Delhi and Mumbai. The National Capital Region recorded its worst post-Dussehra air quality in five years, with average AQI levels surging past 240 and localised pockets crossing 300. Falling temperatures and stagnant winds have trapped emissions from fireworks, traffic, and regional stubble burning, forcing authorities to invoke Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Meanwhile, Mumbai is experiencing an unexpected respiratory crisis despite its coastal advantage. The Bombay High Court sharply rebuked civic authorities and police for failing to prevent unchecked street fireworks and for selectively highlighting pollution metrics from cleaner coastal zones while ignoring toxic hotspots. With weather conditions favouring pollutant stagnation, health experts warn that poor air quality will persist across both cities in the coming days.
