Sanae Takaichi has won the leadership race of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in Japan, which followed outgoing Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s resignation. The victory has put Takaichi on course to become Japan’s first woman Prime Minister. She hailed a “new era” for Japan after her win. She got 185 votes while her opponent, Shinjiro Koizumi, received 156 votes.
