LIVE: New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani Announces Ban On AI Use For Students Until High School| NYC News

New York City is introducing a major new technology policy that will ban students from using artificial intelligence in public schools through the eighth grade, typically covering children up to around age 13 or 14.

The AI ban in NYC schools is set to take effect next week and forms part of a sweeping overhaul of technology use across the United States’ largest public school district, which serves roughly 900,000 students. Under another major change, students will also be kept off laptops and tablets through third grade, generally until around age nine or 10.

The move puts AI in education, artificial intelligence in schools, student screen time and technology use in classrooms under the spotlight. New York City’s education technology policies are closely watched across the United States.
