A Chinese company has shut down its operations in Pakistan’s Gwadar, raising fresh concerns over security and business viability in the region. Hangeng Trade Company cited an ‘unfit business environment,’ operational hurdles, and financial losses after shipments remained stuck despite being in contact with authorities. The development comes amid rising unrest in Balochistan, where Gwadar port has repeatedly faced attacks by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group opposing the Pakistani state and Chinese presence. Since 2021, multiple attacks have targeted Chinese nationals and projects linked to the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). With China planning to invest around $62 billion in Pakistan under CPEC, Gwadar remains a key strategic hub for Beijing’s access to the Arabian Sea. However, ongoing instability is now threatening the future of these projects and raising concerns among global investors.
