Pakistan has inducted its first Chinese-built Hangor-class attack submarine as part of an eight-vessel deal with China. The platform is based on the Type 039A design and features air-independent propulsion for extended underwater operations. Four submarines will be built in China, while four will be assembled in Pakistan under a technology transfer agreement. The deal is valued at approximately $4-5 billion. The development comes amid economic challenges, including inflation, power shortages and rising fuel costs. China’s involvement reflects a deepening defence partnership and expanding strategic presence in the Indian Ocean, while India retains a larger and more advanced navy.
