LIVE: Paraguay Protesters Celebrate Peña’s Impeachment, Gather Outside His Home in Asunción

Protesters gather outside former Paraguayan President Santiago Peña’s residence in Asunción, demanding accountability following the collapse of Ueno Bank. Demonstrations have continued for three consecutive days, with depositors, pensioners, workers and students taking to the streets to demand access to their frozen savings and action against those responsible. Protesters have also called for Peña’s removal, with demonstrations outside Congress turning tense as police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds. Bank employees separately protested over unpaid wages and severance payments.

The protests intensified after Ueno Bank was taken over by Paraguay’s central bank, leaving millions of customers unable to access their accounts. Public anger grew over allegations of political connections and failures in banking oversight. On November 6, Peña was impeached and removed from office, and authorities placed him under house arrest. Protesters have continued gathering outside his residence, demanding justice and the return of their money.
