Watch this video as Firstpost explains how a deadly airstrike along the border between Egypt and Sudan has left at least 72 informal gold miners dead at the remote Jabal al-Uqaydat site, sparking severe friction between the two neighbouring nations. Human rights monitor Emergency Lawyers blamed the Egyptian Air Force for the attack, marking the second major deadly strike at the disputed location this year. While Cairo did not explicitly confirm the raid, the Egyptian military announced a large-scale joint operation along the border aimed at dismantling criminal gold-smuggling networks and safeguarding national sovereignty. The tragedy highlights the growing peril facing desperate Sudanese civilians driven into illegal mining by Sudan’s ongoing civil war. Compounding the regional tension, a targeted shooting in Khartoum killed two Egyptian truck drivers days later. As General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan orders an official investigation, the violent clash of border security enforcement and economic survival risks severely straining Cairo-Khartoum relations. Josh Barnes brings you more on this story on Firstpost Africa.
