On Christmas, the United States conducted “powerful and deadly” airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) targets in northwestern Nigeria. President Donald Trump announced the operation on Truth Social, framing it as a direct response to the “slaughtering of Christians.” The Pentagon later released footage showing missile launches from a naval vessel. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ‘s government has confirmed cooperation with the US for these “precision hits.” The operation, the first of its kind under the current Trump administration, follows months of escalating rhetoric. In October, the US added Nigeria to the list of Countries of Particular Concern, citing severe violations of religious freedom.
