New footage obtained by CNN reveals the extent of damage caused by a major fire aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford, the U.S. Navy’s most advanced and expensive aircraft carrier. The blaze reportedly broke out in March while the carrier was supporting operations linked to Iran, forcing sailors into a 30-hour firefight after an automated suppression system allegedly failed to activate. Charred berthing spaces, collapsed ceilings, hanging wires, and sanitation issues have raised fresh questions about the carrier’s readiness, with reports suggesting repairs could keep the $13-billion warship sidelined for months. Meanwhile, attention is also turning to China’s latest next-generation fighter developments as the global naval and air power competition intensifies.
