While the whole episode is usually only an hour and a half on TV, the preparation and filming can go all day and night.
In a TikTok video, Gia said, “You’ll start getting ready when it’s 6am, [but] you actually go to the location of the dinner party about 2pm.”
In her own video, Mel said the part she was “not prepared for” was what happens when you arrive at the venue. While audiences see the couples stroll straight out of the car and into the cocktail party, it’s actually a much longer experience.
Mel added, “You get taken to a little tent… they’re like marquees. Each couple has their own marquee, and they’re secluded from each other. You’re not allowed to talk to anyone.”
She went on to reveal the participants would have to sit there for 30 minutes to two hours, and if a couple arrived separately, they would each be given their own tent, before heading into the venue for up to two hours.
At the end of the cocktail party, when participants finally hear the “ding, ding, ding” that “dinner is served”, Gia said you “don’t actually go to the dinner”. She explained everyone gets taken back to their tents, and then “one by one”, each couple has to do photo shoots and interviews.
She added, “You’re not going into the dinner party til midnight. By then, you’re so hungry, you probably drank a lot, [and] you’re exhausted…”
On top of that, Mel claimed it then takes two to three hours to film the actual dinner party, because people have to be taken out when drama erupts to film their reaction to what’s been said.
Mel said, “Before I went on MAFS, nothing could have prepared me for this. I know everyone says it takes a long time, but genuinely, it takes a long time.”
