Multicultural Affairs Minister Anne Aly has labelled the anti-immigration protests as “a con by far-right neo-Nazis to prey on some legitimate concerns around housing and cost of living”, saying the organisers pushed “their racist agenda” against people coming from India.
“Let’s not be coy about this – they weren’t protesting immigration from Western countries … they were clearly protesting immigration from countries that have brown people,” she said.
Thousands of people attended anti-immigration rallies and counter-protests in cities across the country, with neo-Nazis and right-wing politicians among those in attendance.
Speaking to the Today show, Senator Jacqui Lambie also issued a clear message to some attendees: “As for the neo-Nazis, if they don’t like it here, pack up your bags and go somewhere else.”
