US first lady Melania Trump has responded to allegations about her connections with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, saying she’s “never been friends” with him.
She also called on US Congress to hold a public hearing centred on survivors of Epstein’s crimes, with a chance to testify before politicians and have their stories entered into the congressional record.
Jeffrey Epstein died in a New York jail cell in 2019 before he could be tried on sex trafficking charges. He was convicted in 2008 of soliciting sex from girls as young as 14.
Despite being a convicted sex offender, files on Epstein released by the US justice department show he maintained connections with high-profile figures across the world.
