Former first lady Michelle Obama has joined The Late Show host Stephen Colbert to discuss US President Donald Trump’s renovations to the White House.
When speaking to Colbert, Obama said she was “confused” by the renovations and said she never thought of it as “belonging to the first family”.
“What I will remind people is that the house is not our house – we never viewed it as our house. We were there for a time. We had a job to do, we always felt it was the people’s house,” she said.
“Every family, every administration has a right and a duty to maintain the house, make investments and improvements, and there are plenty of things that needed fixing there, but the thing that makes me confused,” Obama said.
“I am confused by what are the norms? What are the standards? What are the traditions? I just feel like, what is important to us as a nation anymore?”
The pair’s conversation comes as crews demolish the East Wing of the White House, as Trump continues his plans to build a $US300 million ballroom.
