Minnesota mayors reject Trump’s comments on Somalis amid immigration enforcement threat

Minnesota mayors have rejected US President Donald Trump’s comments about Somali people amid reported immigration enforcement threats.

Upwards of 100 federal immigration agents were poised to conduct raids on the Minnesota cities of Minneapolis and neighbouring Saint Paul, according to the New York Times.

The rumoured immigration raids come after Trump called the Somali community “garbage” and said “we don’t want them in our country”.

In response, Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey said the Somali community would be supported in every way possible by local authorities.

Meanwhile, Saint Paul mayor Melvin Carter said: “The last thing that we need is federal agents coming here, pretending that we should be afraid of somebody just based on the colour of their skin.”
