Nepal’s devastating glacial-linked disaster has raised a major warning for India as scientists highlight the growing instability of glaciers and mountain slopes across the warming Himalayas. The latest research has identified 219 hanging glaciers in the Alaknanda basin of Uttarakhand, covering around 71.7 square kilometres and containing an estimated 2.39 cubic kilometres of ice. Scientists warn that potential avalanche flows in the Badrinath–Mana sector could exceed 50 metres in height.
The warning comes after the catastrophic disaster in Nepal, where a high-altitude collapse involving ice and rock triggered destructive flooding. Scientists say rising temperatures, glacier retreat and changing mountain conditions are increasing the instability of Himalayan terrain.
India’s Himalayan regions contain towns, pilgrimage routes, roads, hydropower projects and other critical infrastructure close to vulnerable mountain terrain. Experts are calling for better glacier mapping, continuous monitoring and stronger early-warning systems to reduce the risk of sudden avalanches, landslides and glacial floods.
