Netanyahu requests presidential pardon over corruption case

Protesters gathered in Tel Aviv after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked the country’s president on Sunday for a pardon in his long-running corruption trial.

Netanyahu, the only sitting prime minister in Israeli history to stand trial, was indicted in 2019 in three separate-but-related cases centring around accusations that he granted favours to prominent business figures and political supporters in exchange for gifts and sympathetic media coverage.

Netanyahu has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and is arguing a pardon is necessary as the criminal proceedings hinder his ability to govern.
