According to a leasehold agreement obtained by The Times, Andrew has paid “one peppercorn (if demanded)” in annual rent since 2003 – excluding the £1 million that the prince initially spent on the lease and at least £7.5 million in the renovations that were completed in 2005.
The leasehold agreement also reveals that if Andrew were to give up the mansion’s lease, the Crown would be obliged to pay him £500,000 in compensation.
The revelation comes just days after Buckingham Palace announced that Andrew would be giving up his Duke of York title.
